The Path

there’s something to be said about someone

who never takes a step forward because

they’re too afraid about taking a step backward.

maybe it’s dark

and they can’t see if there’s even a path in front of them,

and they don’t want to risk it.

maybe the path has the chance of

leading down a tumultuous road,

and they aren’t in the mood for that environment.

if they step forward,

maybe they can never step backward,

and they’re indecisive.

maybe they’re waiting for

someone to signal that it’s all right to go for it.

maybe.

They step backward.

They fall off the edge of a cliff.

Because they weren’t watching

where they were going.
